Wheelchair Handle extensions in use
1.1 Wheelchair Handles
IATP’s Reuse Program asked the Makers Team to adapt the push handles on a pediatric wheelchair. The height of the handles for pushing the wheelchair were too low for the individual’s caregiver. The Makers team developed multiple prototypes for the handle extensions. The team decided on using PVC pipe, pipe fittings and 3D printed parts. The main shaft of the handle extension is half-inch PVC pipe cut to length. PVC was used for the shaft due to its increased shear strength compared to a 3D printed part of a similar size and shape. 3D printed wedges were added for extra stability. The extended handles accommodated the caregiver’s height and allowed the caregiver to maintain a more upright posture when pushing the wheelchair.
