Jim was introduced to the Makers program in 2023 when he requested a fabricated device for one of his leisure activities. Recently, Jim’s Occupational Therapist (OT) contacted the Makers program in hopes of a device that could be customized to his current abilities of wrist and hand movement to adaptively stabilize a palm cuff with an attached extended and angled handle in his hand to itch his face. Makers staff members met with Jim, his wife, and his OT to observe Jim’s therapy session and discuss ideas for a fabricated device.

The current device being used was fabricated by his (OT) using built up foam for the palm cuff and end point as well as hanger wire adjusted to the appropriate angle but he needed a more refined and durable product. The Makers were able to gather preliminary information during the observation such as measurements to create a fabricated device similar to what he was previously using. The device is made from 3D printed material, loc line, and an exchangeable, modular end point to change the top to successfully complete other tasks such as self-feeding.
