IATP Makers were contacted by a family looking for a solution for their daughter. Kei’anna is a powerchair user. Her chair has a custom seat, a mounted communication device attached to her wheelchair, and a lap tray to support her iPad which is always with her. They were looking for something to place on Kei’anna’s lap tray that can support her in a more upright position to help hold her iPad in optimal alignment for hand use and vision. The Maker team discussed what would be the possible best solution. They decided to make a new lap tray for her. They first started with measurements and then made a cardboard prototype. After sending it to Kei’anna’s family for trial and making some minor adjustments, they had the perfect measurements to make the tray. The Makers used a 3D printed base with a custom cut acrylic sheet so it would be able to sit on top of her wheelchair. They attached another piece of acrylic to the acrylic sheet, so that Kei’anna could keep her arms in, while maintaining her posture. Once Kei’anna received her new wheelchair tray she was very happy with how great the tray works for her.
