arm with adaptive blacksmithing tool

Randi is a blacksmith apprentice with a limb difference which results in the inability to grasp with her dominant left arm. She asked the IATP Makers to develop a low-cost tool that will allow her to use blacksmithing tools. The device must be heat-resistant, secure, and able to withstand blacksmithing forces. Ideally, it will also allow for changing the tool.

We worked with Randi and the blacksmiths in Galena through each stage of development and were overjoyed to work with such a knowledgeable and skilled group of individuals. The final product used a combination of 3D printing and carbon fiber/resin application to create a durable, heat-resistant, interchangeable blacksmithing tool.

We hope this open-source design can be adapted for use with other tools, and encourage other Makers to engage in our volunteer forum and continue to refine this design.
